From Tornado GR1 – ZA326 the Raspberry Ripple trials Aircraft

GP001 Experimental Avionis Trials pod

This is a Tornado Aircraft 1000 Ltr capacity Supersonic Fuel Tank modified for use as a trials pod (GP Pod). Serial number is 001. Drop tank was modified in the 1980’smodified and split into 6 bays to house experimental avionics trails equipment. First conceived at RAE Bedford in 1988 then used at RAE Farnborough.

We have established that this pod has been used for:

Inav, CVNS and transfer alignment trials July 2000
Nav system trials 1998
Collision warning trials
Only ever used on one aircraft ZA326 the raspberry ripple GR1 trials aircraft. Carried on the centre line pylon on belly of the aircraft. Last photo illustrates ZA326 in service only.

Pod flown for last time 31/01/2002. Total pod flow hours: 76 hrs 05 mins

In service this used to contain: 486 pentium PC, Downwards facing camera, Rad altimeter, data logger, Inverts, transponder, INS, GPS and various other ‘trials’ avionics. VCR.

All internal avionics have been removed when the pod was decommissioned from service use. The pod is now empty as per the internal photos.

Listing includes the Air-Log transport cradle which is a ‘Cradle transportation / loading for A/C fuel tank type B’ as used on Jaguar, Buccaneer, Tornado etc

Developments in terrain-referenced navigation which introduced covert techniques for guidance and control and a multi-mode laser radar for the purpose of cable and obstacle detection. This CO2 Laser Radar, or CLARA, was developed with industry and jointly with the French. It demonstrated a highly effective method for obstacle detection. It is mounted in a blue pod attached to the centre fuselage pylon. i.e. THIS POD
